The Pilates Method
Pilates is a safe and effective method of fitness training and rehabilitation for any age and fitness level. Developed nearly a century ago by Joseph Pilates, the Pilates method consists of more than 500 carefully developed exercises that strengthen and tone muscles, increase flexibility and physical symmetry, and improve coordination and balance. Modifications are used to “work around” a particular injury or health condition, which helps the body to heal as it maintains or gains strength. Exercises are performed on a floor mat or using special Pilates equipment. This special apparatus uses a system of levers, pulleys, and coiled springs that place the body in the proper anatomical position, and provide the appropriate tension for muscle development and flexibility. Pilates instruction focuses on keeping the spine stable, the abdominals engaged, the arms and legs active, and the breath conscious, even and regular. Mat Pilates mimics many of the apparatus exercises, but uses our own bodies to provide the optimal position and muscle tension.
Look & Feel Healthier
The precise movements, form and breath help the body’s muscular system to work through each practice more effectively. Throughout the Pilates practice, the spine becomes elongated and the abdominals create a strong “core” or “center”. Posture, physical appearance, and sense of well-being all improve as a result. Those who practice Pilates often find that their training encourages healthier postures and movements even outside the Pilates studio. Injuries are more easily prevented, and aches and pains caused by improper sitting posture in cars and desk chairs may be eradicated.
Who Benefits from Pilates?
Thanks to its amazing therapeutic attributes, Pilates is often prescribed by physicians, physical therapists, and chiropractors to help patients safely recover from and/or prevent injury. And because of the way regular practice can morph the body, models and actors such as Miranda Kerr, Anna Paquin, and Sandra Bullock use Pilates to look and feel stronger, longer, and leaner. Pilates is also highly regarded in the professional dance and athletic community. Pro golfer Tiger Woods, the LA Lakers, the LA Dodgers, Olympians, and other professional athletes use Pilates to optimize their performance. Overall, Pilates is a safe and effective exercise program for men and women of all ages and fitness levels. It is for anyone who needs to recover or prevent injury, optimize their athletic performance, or just want to look and feel stronger and healthier.
